Title: Talking With Tech LIVE: Brainstorming Solutions To Real-Life AAC Questions 

Duration: 90 minutes

Target Audience: SLP, OT, PT, Teacher, ABA, parents, administrators 

Statement of Need: Educators and families have questions about how to consider, yselect, and implement augmentative/alternative communication (AAC) in a way that will be successful for the user. Knowledge and experience varies greatly when it comes to learning about AAC. In this Q&A style of session, participants not only get to have their own questions answered but learn from the facilitated dialogue with others. 

Abstract: Talking With Tech is a free, weekly podcast about augmentative/alternative communication. Listeners from around the world have sent in questions about how to consider, select, and implement AAC with students and families. In this interactive session, authentic questions will be posted in a multimedia slide deck and displayed to the participants. Presenters, Chris Bugaj and Rachel Madel will facilitate the experience while also providing evidence-based strategies. Together, participants will brainstorm solutions to the questions and these solutions will be documented in a shared resource and via audio recording. The audio recording will be released on the podcast to help everyone in the community benefit and learn from the crowd-sourced solutions.

  1. Describe three tools used to effectively implement AAC.

  2. Describe three strategies used to effectively implement AAC.

  3. Describe a system for evaluating which tools and strategies might be considered evidence-based.

Participants will not only learn tools and strategies during this live presentation but will be part of the crowd-sourced solution to help everyone with their most challenging roadblocks to effective AAC selection and implementation.
